Google made deal with Life mag: awesome pics

My 2 Cents: This is for a ya budding photographers out there.  It is truly amazing how a picture is able to take you back in time and I really had no idea that LIFE Magazine has been publishing for such a long time..

These pictures are amazing…:O) ENJOY

Google Inc. has opened an online photo gallery that will feature millions of images from Life magazine’s archives that have never been seen by the public before. The new service, available at images.google.com/hosted/life, debuted Tuesday with about 2 million photos. Eventually, Google plans to scan all 10 million photos from Life’s library so they can be viewed on any computer with an Internet connection. About 97 percent of Life’s archives have not been publicly seen, according to Life.

The photos can be printed out for free as long as they aren’t being used as part of an attempt to make money. Time Warner Inc., Life’s parent company, hopes to make money by selling high-resolution, framed prints. The orders will be processed through Qoop.com. Life’s archives include photos from the Civil War as well as some of the most memorable moments from the 20th century, including the Zapruder film capturing John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Go check it.

Blockbuster joins Netflix in video-on-demand

My 2 Cents:  It seems that NetFlix is not the only one that wants VOD (video on demand) to be the next best thing since sliced bread.  It seems that blockbuster is going to be nice and give you the device (glorified DVD player) free but will it be able to keep up with NetFlix’s unlimited plan (monthly fee)…we will have to see but since NetFlix is available on the XBOX360 don’t think that I am ready for another device…

Blockbuster just upped the ante in its competition against Netflix: The media entertainment provider Tuesday rolled out a digital media player that offers instant access through television sets to on-demand content of recently released movies. The service is essentially the evolution of Blockbuster’s Movielink.com site, which offers roughly 10,000 on-demand movies for download to personal computers. Some 2,000 of those titles can be downloaded to televisions via Blockbuster OnDemand. Two elements of Blockbuster’s recent offering are different from Netflix’s: the fees and the movies.

First, the 2Wire MediaPoint digital media player is available at no charge —but the customer must rent 25 Blockbuster OnDemand movies in advance, at a cost of $99 through the company’s online service. After the initial 25 rentals, movie rentals start at $1.99 each. The players will begin shipping in time for the holiday season. Movies stay on the player for 30 days; once a movie is started, it must be viewed within 24 hours. Rival Netflix has a free “Watch Instantly” feature, which streams movies to subscribers’ TVs or personal computers, but users must subscribe to its unlimited monthly service. Second, Blockbuster said the movies it is offering are more current that those of other subscription-based services. Many of the films will be available through the Blockbuster OnDemand service within weeks of leaving theaters, according to the company.

Microsoft will offer free antivirus product

My 2 Cents:  Its about time that Microsoft realized that a build-in virus protection app is well needed in protecting the stability of their operating system similar to the way that Windows Defender has done with spyware.

Microsoft Corp. said it will offer free software to protect PCs from viruses, in a move that could pose new challenges for independent makers of security software. The Redmond, Wash., company said it plans to introduce its security software, code-named Morro, during the second half of next year in an effort to persuade more users to secure their PCs against spyware, viruses and other forms of “malware.” Use of antimalware software is far from universal, especially in emerging markets.

There are two primary reasons consumers supply for not protecting their PCs, including a concern that the anti-malware software will bog down their PCs, said Amy Barzdukas, senior director of product management for the online services and Windows division at Microsoft. The other reason is the cost of security software, which can run $75 for the programs plus two years of updates. Morro will replace another security software program Windows Live OneCare, a broader suite of software and services. Microsoft will discontinue retail sales of that software, which costs consumers $49.95 a year, on June 30 of next year. The shift to a free security offering from Microsoft could be a problem for Symantec Corp., McAfee Inc. and other independent security companies that charge consumers for their products.

Peek CEO: buy two Peeks, your next iPhone or G1 bill is on us

My 2 Cents:  Now here is a fun deal for all ya iPhone and G1 owners that donÂ’t know what get the rents (parents) for the holidays.  Seems like a pretty good deal to me…especially since this item was rated as one of the best gadgets of the year…

Yesterday we sat down for an interview with Amol Sarva, CEO of the email-handheld startup Peek. We’re in the midst of transcribing what was a fairly interesting conversation, but in the middle of our chat he proposed a curious deal, and we wanted to put it out there (as well as see the company put its money where its mouth is). Sarva and co. are pretty convinced that while the Peek may not be the perfect device for the hardcore gadget junkie, it is the perfect device for their moms or girlfriends (or boyfriends, we assume) — in fact, they’re so convinced that they’re offering to pay a month of said junkie’s iPhone or G1 bill (up to $150) if they buy a Peek for their mom… and girlfriend. According to Amol, if you buy two of the devices (which you can get for $79.95 right now) and activate them, the company will cover your November cellphone bill. Amol himself will be heading up this project, and as long as you place your order by December 1st, you can make the magic happen. Wildly, Amol says to just email him with the account info at: amol (at) getpeek (dot) com.

My 2 Cents:  Here is a nice little update for all ya PS3 owners out there…it seems that now you will have Flash support by tomorrow if everything goes well with this next version…

It seems like just yesterday (or last month, to be more exact) that we were enjoying the spoils of firmware 2.50, and now, Sony’s giving us a little pre-Thanksgiving treat with version 2.53. Slated to hit the wires sometime on November 26th, the latest PlayStation 3 update will bring along full-screen Flash support (huzzah!) among other minor tweaks. Check the full changelog in the read link, and get ready to get your download on tomorrow.

My 2 Cents:  Now this is another pieces of technology that I can not wait to be a reality.  I can not wait to see it actually working…too cool…

It’s still not quite point-and-shoot, but it looks like some researchers at Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (or NICT) have gone some ways towards making holography a tiny bit more practical. As Tech-On reports, their method is based around a fly-eye lens that consists of a number of micro lenses, which allows for moving images to be captured in normal lighting conditions, and is also used to display the image after a computer works its magic on the raw images. There are still a few fairly significant drawbacks to the setup, however, as the image displayed is currently limited to one centimeter in size with a two degree viewing angle, although the researchers say they should be able to increase that to a four centimeters within the next three years. Check out an equally tiny image of an actual hologram captured with the system after the break.

My 2 Cents: This looks too good :O)

My 2 Cents:  I guess the marriage between the XBOX and NetFlix might be not as good as I thought.  Hopefully you have had a better experience…but it is just the beginning so all the kinks still need to be ironed out

If you wouldn’t mind looking up from that avatar creation screen for a second — yes, we’re aware of how much that t-shirt selection means about you as a person — you might notice that your Xbox 360 is dead. At least, a few hapless souls on the Xbox forums seem to think NXE is to blame for such atrocities. Numerous folks are reporting variously bad red ring configurations, random freezing and a huge pile of blockbuster titles that won’t just play themselves. The biggest problem is that Microsoft isn’t universally treating problems caused by NXE as an “oh, our bad” sort of situation, and at least from anecdotes we’re seeing has charged quite a few folks $100 to fix their freshly-out-warranty Xbox 360s — not to mention separating them for weeks from their precious murder simulators.

My 2 Cents:  I totally love this type of technology and with the Windows 7 having multi-touch built in the possibilities will be endless to where we will start seeing in our daily lives.

If you’ve been waiting for that Minority Report-style interface to really come to fruition, you can finally exhale. One of the science advisors from the Steven Spielberg film — along with a team of other zany visionaries — has created an honest-to-goodness, real-world implementation of the computer systems seen in the movie. Dubbed g-speak, the mind bending OS combines “gestural i/o, recombinant networking, and real-world pixels,” to deliver what the creators call “the first major step in [a] computer interface since 1984.” There are some things that need to seen to be understood, so watch the video after the break, and prepare to have your mind thoroughly blown to bits.

My 2 Cents:  I really think that all of these new functions in cars are just distracting and makes people complacent in thinking that that they don’t have to use their common scene and good judgment.

Fujitsu and automotive safety advancements go hand-in-hand, so it’s no shock whatsoever to hear that the outfit is fixing to showcase a new technology that enables wraparound view of vehicles in real-time. The new video-processing technology “adapts to different driving situations, enabling the driver to peripherally view the entire surroundings of a vehicle, from the point of view and field of view that is most appropriate for each driving situation.” Obviously, such an inclusion would come in handy when parking downtown, passing on a narrow street and / or watching your back should real life ever mimic something straight out of GTA IV. Unfortunately, there’s no word as to when an automaker will begin infusing its automobiles with this here invention, but our insurance premiums are begging for it to be sooner rather than later.
