My 2 Cents: Do you think that his will really happen?

Washington, DC:

US Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA) will introduce legislation in Congress to strip the federal government of its authority to arrest responsible cannabis consumers. Representative Frank made the announcement last week on the nationally syndicated television show, "Real Time With Bill Maher."

"It’s time for the politicians to catch up with the public on this [issue]," Frank told host Bill Maher, who sits on NORML’s Advisory Board. "The notion that you lock people up for smoking marijuana is pretty silly."

Frank’s pending bill seeks to eliminate all federal penalties prohibiting the personal use and possession of up to 100 grams (3 1/2 ounces) of marijuana. Under this measure, adults who consume cannabis would no longer face arrest, prison, or even the threat of a civil fine. The bill also eliminates all penalties prohibiting the not-for-profit transfers of up to one ounce of pot.

NORML Legal Counsel Keith Stroup, who worked closely with Frank’s staff to draft this legislation, said, "If passed by Congress, this legislation would legalize the possession, use, and non-profit transfer of marijuana by adults for the first time since 1937."

The bill incorporates the primary recommendations of the National Commission on Marijuana and Drug Abuse (also known as the Shafer Commission), which affirmed to Congress 36 years ago, "The actual and potential harm of use of the drug is not great enough to justify intrusion by the criminal law into private behavior, a step which our society takes only with the greatest reluctance."

Currently, 12 states and numerous municipalities have enacted versions of marijuana decriminalization, eliminating criminal penalties for minor pot violations. Passage of these laws has not led to increased marijuana use.

To date, the only US government study ever commissioned to assess whether the enforcement of strict legal penalties positively impacts marijuana use found, "Overall, the preponderance of the evidence which we have gathered and examined points to the conclusion that decriminalization has had virtually no effect either on the marijuana use or on related attitudes and beliefs about marijuana use among American young people."

Similar statewide legislation is pending in New Hampshire and Vermont. Additionally, Massachusetts’ voters will likely decide on a statewide decriminalization measure this November.

According to a nationwide CNN/Time Magazine poll, more than three-quarters of American adults favor decriminalizing marijuana.

My 2 Cents: You know the educational system has gone to shiite when you have 11 year students taking over…don’t get me wrong, I think it is great the work that he has done.  You would think that they would at least give him a partner?  I wonder if they are paying him…probably not ;O)

Seeing as our high school network hijinks pretty much led to semi-permanent suspension, our barren hearts were actually warmed by the story of 11-year-old Jon Penn, who has been in charge of his elementary school’s 60-machine network since last year. The previous network administrator at the Arkansas school simply up and left, leaving the IT systems in shambles — and in the hands of Jon’s mom, the school librarian. Jon’s since scrubbed the aging Windows 98 machines of their accumulated viruses and spyware, and he’s installed a firewall and virus / spam filter to keep things clean while he works out a plan to move to Windows 2000 and centralized system management. Right now though, Jon’s got his hands busy doing everything from fixing everything from paper jams to revising server configurations, and it sounds like he’s having a ball — he says he’s been testing out virtualization products lately, and he’s studying up for A+ technician certification this summer. Looks like school’s a lot more fun when you’re running the show, no?

My 2 Cents: This is for all you MAC lovers out there that always touted how secure MAC was…not that it was not true at the time but more to the fact that no-one wanted to hack the mac, because there was no reason.  Now with the growth of the NEW Leopard, that is no longer the case and now MAC feels the cat & mouse game that Microsoft has had to deal with (2 mins…too funny) being the most widely used OS…

The funny thing is that the one technology that has always been secure and widely adopted by manufactures is LINUX and with their new focus on user experience (Beryl / xFusion) they really might start having a chance at take a larger piece of that pie ;O)

Mac OS X’s reputation for security was tarnished Thursday when a team of researchers from Independent Security Evaluators (ISE) managed to hack a MacBook Air in two minutes using a zero-day vulnerability in Apple’s Safari 3.1 Web browser. The ISE security researchers — Charlie Miller, Jake Honoroff, and Mark Daniel — were participating in the “PWN to OWN” competition at the CanSecWest security conference, which began Wednesday in Vancouver, British Columbia. “Pwn” is computer gaming slang for “own,” as in conquer. The “p” typo serves to heighten the humiliation of defeat by emphasizing that the loss came at the hands of a youth who can’t even spell or type correctly. The term has also come to be used in security circles.

Contest participants had their choice of trying to hack an Apple MacBook Air running OS X 10.5.2, a Sony Vaio VGN-TZ37CN running Ubuntu 7.10, or a Fujitsu U810 running Vista Ultimate SP1. During the first day, when attacks were limited to network attacks on the operating system, no one managed to compromise any of the systems. That changed Thursday when attacks on default client-side applications — Web browser, e-mail, IM — were allowed. The ISE team won $10,000 from security firm TippingPoint Technologies for compromising the MacBook Air. The undisclosed vulnerability in Safari 3.1 has been shown to Apple and no further information about it will be revealed until Apple can issue an update, TippingPoint said.

My 2 Cents: For all you crack-berries out there never really been that big in to phones but have always been quite impressed by the way RIMM has developed their devices and their newest addition looks no different.  If they still kept its respectable battery-life I really feel that this will be a winner ;O)

Sony to develop own DRM-free music store

My 2 Cents: Its always nice when the big players in the industry start to notice that there is no way to stop music wether it be free of not from finding its way around the Internet….its nice to see that they are starting to see the error in their ways ;O)

SonyBMG is working on an all-you-can-eat, DRM-free subscription service, says SonyBMG CEO Rolf Schmidt-Holtz. In a Monday interview (English) with the German-language newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Schmidt-Holtz discussed the new service and was quoted as saying that the “simplest option would be a flat rate,” offering access to Sony BMG’s catalog for a monthly fee of 6 to 8 euros ($9 to $12). The service will provide downloads in a format compatible with all music players, including Apple’s iPod. Naturally, unless Apple decides to license its proprietary FairPlay DRM format, Schmidt-Holtz’s announcement means that service will likely offer its music as DRM-free MP3 files – a concession that he indirectly confirms, noting that it is “even possible that clients could keep some songs indefinitely, that they would own them even after the subscription expired. “

Speaking with the Associated Press, a Bertelsmann spokesman confirmed the interview but refused to provide additional details. Schmidt-Holtz said his company is also in early talks with mobile phone companies like Nokia, in an effort to provide a subscription service over cellular networks: users could pay a one-time fee, he speculated, and then have unlimited access to music downloads over the air. In fact, Schmidtz-Holtz spoke warmly of Apple – who is reportedly working on its own subscription service – calling the company a “very strong partner” and noting that everyone benefits from Apple’s success in the digital music arena, even if Sony BMG may soon be competing with it.

Adobe launches free online Photoshop

My 2 Cents: For all you budding graphic artists out there this really seems like a nice addition to the list of FREE web-based applications.  Kind of used to seeing this kind of stuff coming from Google but its nice to see someone new in the genre.  A nice feature is that it links directly into your FaceBook account just in case a little air-brushing might be needed.  You never know…this could be Google’s next purchase…who knows Adobe (Macromedia) & Google ;O)

Adobe has released its Photoshop Express web-based imaging application as a public beta. Photoshop Express uses much of Adobe’s image editing technology and has been re-purposed as a web-based application. Users can store up to 2GB of images online for free, make edits to their photos and share them online. Photoshop Express also allows users to download and upload photos from popular social networking sites like Facebook. The application provides ’standard edits’, such as removing blemishes and red-eye, converting to black and white, cropping and resizing.

Photoshop Express also offers tricks like Pop Color which selects an object in an image, mutes the background colour of the photo and allows the user to swap the object’s colour so that it “jumps off the page”. Sketch effects make photos look like drawings, and a Distort feature allows users to distort facial features or objects for a comical or artistic effect. Adobe said that even users with limited photo editing knowledge can simply select what looks best from a line-up of sample photos with visual hints showing different variations of the added effect. During the public beta period, Adobe will solicit user feedback on product features and functionality which will “continue to evolve over time”.

WESTERN BUREAU:

A large company in Montego Bay, St James, is the most recent business to be caught with illegal connections to the Jamaica Public Service Company’s (JPS) distribution lines.

It has since been deemed that the company owes $50 million for the electricity used.

JPS has confirmed that, in February, representatives of its Loss Reduction Team discovered a direct connection to JPS lines at the location during an investigation.

Will not disclose details

While the light and power company says it does not disclose details of customers’ accounts to the public, The Gleaner understands that the company in question is the National Asset Recovery Services (NARS), which operates from the Montego Freeport area.

"We are not issuing a statement," executive assistant at NARS, Angelita Whyte, told this newspaper when queries were made into the matter.

According to Winsome Callum, corporate communications manager at JPS, the Montego Bay police were alerted to the discovery of illegal abstraction of electricity at the location, and that the company "will be taking steps to recover for the electricity used illegally at the premises".

NARS’s contact centre began operations in Jamaica on June 9, 2003, and employs more than 800 persons.

According to its website, the company is based in St Louis, Missouri, in the United States, and from its contact centres in the United States, the Caribbean and Latin America, NARS offers default, customer care and electronic services to major financial, consumer and service companies.

A release issued by JPS states that it continues an aggressive campaign to reduce electricity theft among both residential customers and businesses.

My 2 Cents:  Its only a matter of time before we start seeing the designer versions of this lovely garment ;O)  I can only imagine the real-life benefits of a material like this if it was affordable to the masses…A TRUE MUST FOR ANY JAMAICAN ;o)

Mind you, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen garb constructed to withstand vicious knife fights, and apparently a few Japanese streets are becoming just as frightening as some in London. Reportedly created to provide protection against stabbers following an "increasing number of malicious crimes that have victimized children and late-night convenience store clerks," Nihon Uni has developed a t-shirt crafted from "ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene fiber." Aside from rendering blades useless, the material is also completely machine washable and lightweight; still, the fabric can be penetrated by "sharp points," so it’s up to you to steer clear of rooftop archers. Nevertheless, long-sleeved versions can be had this June for ¥22,000 ($221) to ¥59,000 ($593), while the way less protective short-sleeved variety will run you between ¥19,000 ($191) and ¥52,000 ($522).

LG’s Flatron LX206WU joins the multiple USB display party – Engadget

My 2 Cents: Been wanted to have a multiple monitor setup for a long time.  The big thing was always the price of each monitor plus I have to make sure to have a decent video card or some type of converter ~ 1000 smackers.  This truly makes affordable to own an awesome set of monitors in the near future…;O)

We’re not sure why hooking up six displays has suddenly become the new USB multiple-monitor demo of choice, but LG isn’t one to let Samsung have all the glory — the company just announced the USB-capable 20.1-inch Flatron LX206WU, which outguns Sammy’s UbiSync 940UX by a single, triumphant inch. LG says you can feed up to six displays from a single USB port using a hub, but it’s not saying what the max video bitrate or resolution is. Just like the Samsung, it looks like USB video support is Windows-only for now, but Mac and Linux peeps can jack into the 5000:1 contrast ratio and 2ms response time through DVI and VGA, which are notably absent on Sammy’s unit. No word on Stateside availability, but if you’re headed to Korea we hear a smile and 390,000 won ($388) should do the trick.

Christopher Anand, managing partner for Tavistock.

KINGSTON, Jamaica, March 20, 2008 - Officials in Jamaica are waiting to see if a major tourism development planned for the island will be affected following the news that one of the men involved in the initiative will lose hundreds of millions of dollars in the recent buyout of United States investment bank, Bear Stearns by competitor JPMorgan Chase and Company.

The Harmony Cove project planned for over 1,000 hotel rooms, 11 manor homes on five-acre lots, 88 villas, and 60 condominiums in a luxury tourism resort in the parish of Trelawny. Government partnered with the Florida-based Tavistock Group on the project.

But reports out of the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (US) have indicated that British-born currency trader, Joe Lewis who is the principal shareholder in the Group was estimated to lose over US$1 billion in his investment in Bear Stearns, the fifth-biggest investment bank in the US.

The Harmony Cove project which was announced since 2004 was expected to take 10 years to complete at a cost of US$2 billion.

According to the reports, the multi-billionaire in the last six months bought enough stock to become the firm’s largest shareholder, with a nine per cent stake by year-end.

US regulatory filings indicated that he paid more than US$100 each for the majority of his 12.14 million shares. JP Morgan has struck a deal to buy Bear Stears for a basement price of $339 million, or US$2.32 a share.

However, Bloomberg has reported that the 71-year-old investor may push the bank to consider alternatives to the JPMorgan buyout.

It reported Lewis as saying he would take "whatever action" he thought necessary to protect his investment.

"I think it’s a derisory offer and I don’t think they will get it," CNBC quoted Lewis as saying about the JPMorgan bid announced on March 16.
